Published on August 11, 2025
The TIOBE index for August 2025 has been published for the first time – and Python maintains its dominance, this time with a share of 26.14% in the ranking, partly fueled by AI assistants that favor popular languages. At the same time, Perl rises spectacularly, narrowing the gap with older classic languages.

Comments and Interpretations
-
Python consolidates its leading position, and its rise is partially explained by the benefits offered by AI assistants – the models are heavily trained with Python code, which makes them perform well in this language.
-
Perl, as noted by the TIOBE director himself, “does not have a clear explanation” for its comeback, but the trend suggests that old languages are gaining traction again.
-
Other classic languages such as Visual Basic, Delphi, or Ada (now ranked 13th) continue to rise, indicating that developers are reevaluating traditional options.
About the TIOBE Index
-
The index measures programming language popularity based on the frequency of the language name appearing in search engines (Google, Bing, Wikipedia, etc.).
-
It is not a quality index or a measure of actual production use, but rather reflects the interest and level of discussion about each language.
Conclusion
August 2025 confirms Python's hegemony, but what is remarkable is the notable comeback of older languages like Perl. This rediscovery suggests a trend of reevaluating established solutions, as well as a possible influence of AI on the programming language ecosystem.
