What role does classic SEO still have?

Every time a new technology appears, many declare it the "end" of what came before. This was said about television, radio, print, and more recently, about SEO.

But the truth is more nuanced: Classic SEO is not dying – it is just specializing.

In a world dominated by ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, or Perplexity, AI algorithms respond excellently to informational questions ("what is", "how does it work", "what are the steps for…").

However, there are areas where Google remains king – and there traditional SEO still produces tangible results.

1️⃣ Transactional searches: where the intent is to buy

If someone searches for "programming laptop 2025" or "hosting subscription Romania", the purpose is clear: to buy.

AI engines can suggest options, but most users still want to visit real websites, compare prices, see reviews, specifications, images, and delivery conditions.

This is where classic SEO comes in:

  • optimizing product titles and descriptions;

  • implementing relevant meta tags (price, availability);

  • optimizing images (alt text, sizes, modern formats);

  • fast pages, easy to navigate, mobile compatible.

Additionally, AIs draw inspiration from the content of these pages – so good optimization not only attracts users but also feeds AI models with accurate information.

2️⃣ Local searches: where geography matters

If you want a "dentist in Bucharest sector 3" or "car service Cluj", you won’t ask ChatGPT.

AI does not have real-time data about local businesses, and people want concrete, verifiable results: address, hours, phone, reviews.

Here, Local SEO remains essential:

  • completing and updating the Google Business Profile;

  • adding authentic reviews;

  • correctly mentioning NAP data (Name, Address, Phone) on the site;

  • links from trusted local directories.

Even in the AI era, a well-optimized local search can bring more conversions than any paid ad campaign.

3️⃣ Technical optimization: the foundation of visibility

No matter how good the content is, a slow, unstable, or insecure site has no chance – neither against AI nor against Google.

Technical SEO remains the backbone of any online presence:

  • loading speed (Core Web Vitals)

  • optimization of images and scripts

  • mobile-friendly design

  • HTTPS and security

  • logical URL structure and updated sitemaps

These elements are "invisible" to the reader but crucial for any crawler – including AI agents that learn from page structure.

🔍 Conclusion: SEO and AI, not SEO vs AI

AI has fundamentally changed the way we search for and consume information.

Still, classic SEO remains indispensable for everything related to commercial intent, geolocation, and technical performance.

In the long run, online success will not depend on choosing between SEO and AI, but on integrating them.

AI will direct traffic to trusted sources, and SEO will ensure those sources are accessible, fast, and relevant.

SEO is no longer just a race for the number 1 position on Google — it is a total visibility strategy, adapted to a world where people and AI collaborate to find the best answers.
